Irugurutzeta Museum

The Irugurutzeta Interpretation Centre stems from Irún Town Council’s desire to revitalise one of the most representative mining and industrial sites within the historical heritage of the municipality and of Gipuzkoa.

Through this initiative, the City Council aims to transform the old calcination kilns and their surroundings into an educational, experiential and innovative space, enabling visitors to understand the historical, technical and human significance of mining, whilst reinforcing its integration into the city’s cultural and tourist life.

At Scott & Irwin, we have designed an interactive, immersive and flexible space based on four fundamental pillars:

Emotional narrative: A sensory journey divided into five areas that connects visitors with the history of mining.

Functional technology: The use of intuitive, efficient and easy-to-maintain technological solutions, always in the service of the narrative.

Accessibility and sustainability: Universal access design (physical, sensory and cognitive) using eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient lighting, whilst respecting the building’s original architecture.

Self-management (CMS): Implementation of a system that enables staff to update content independently, ensuring the centre’s long-term viability and relevance.

The Irugurutzeta project was conceived as an inclusive, barrier-free space, designed to serve as a meeting place for the community and a valuable educational tool, whilst enriching Irún and the Bidasoa region by reviving our mining history and transforming it into a new cultural landmark in Gipuzkoa.

Thanks to immersive, modern and engaging technology, it offers an appealing experience that will foster a sense of connection amongst local residents.

The end result is the regeneration of this scenic site in accordance with strict ecological criteria, returning to the public a space with a low environmental impact that will provide a real boost to the area.
